about

Save Me is centred around the poetry of Kanyashree, an advocate for improving the status of women in West Bengal. Some of her poetry includes the following: "Save a girl child, pretend I am a tree, save the future mothers and grandmothers, and save me." This song has evolved to become more of a spoken word-meets-chant and the lyrics speak not only to saving girl children, but also to looking at, and learning from, women through the ages, and embracing our ancestry.

lyrics

I am a daughter, think of me as a tree, With roots of grandmothers and mothers, Then save me.
I am a daughter, think of me as a tree, With roots of grandmothers and mothers, Then save me.

Through the eyes of our elders,
Evolution, like earth’s revolution, circles history, Tracing the past with real life experience,
Real time, life line, our story,
A pillar of strength,
Foundation for our creation,
She knows her so-called place
And yet constantly carves out her own space, Nurture in her being,
Grandmother nature, all-knowing, all-seeing.

Threads of origin woven under the earth,
Clinging to ages-old soil at birth,
Born from, and released, back to the root,
In between is the fruit...

Through the eyes of the mother,
She is a link, a bridge to
who we are, where we come from,
who we might be in the future,
A provider of love, of life, of sustenance, Of support for her own daughters to be what they want to be,
To feel, to act as they will,
but always with respect,
and be respected in return.
That is what she yearns for...

Through the eyes of our future,
New breath, new life on this earth,
Innocence at birth,
Dreaming of who they’ll be, imagining what they’ll see, Flying free, life’s reverie,
A footprint in the sand with the tide will disappear,
Who they are, how they live,
What they do in the now and here
is what will shape the lives of everyone they touch and see, their destiny.

...Seeds that form the root
that hold the tree, branching out
with leaves and flowers that fruit,
then drop their (seeds)...
