about

In 2013, Suba and Dylan travelled to Kenya to give masterclasses with their friend Mary Tangelder, a specialist in global conflict resolution. In these workshops, we learned that linguistic and tribal differences are the source of great conflict in Kenya, and the three of us came up with a simple vocal counting exercise, but added a twist: groups would do it in pairs, and each would teach the other how to count in their language. The participants told us that this sharing helped lead to a greater sense of empathy and understanding between cultures, and inspired the message behind this simple, but not-so-simple song.

lyrics

It's not hard to count to eleven
Just try eight-plus-three
Or maybe four-plus-seven
Sure sounds good to me

Can you teach me to count to eleven
In your native tongue?
Maybe we'll do it together
Could be kind of fun

If I learn to speak your language
I could understand
Your thought and feelings and problems
I could lend a hand
And we can help everybody
And learn their language too
And we could all work together
Building something new

People want to keep us divided
Words can do that too
If we can't understand each other
But we'll show them
Cause you and I can count to eleven
In your language or mine
And we can understand each other
And things will work out fine
